Projects – concrete, on-site, documented.

Three areas, one shared idea: help that empowers. Our partner is the Diocese of Mbulu in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania.

In Tanzania – as in most developing countries – health care and education have traditionally been delivered by the churches. Only in the past 10 to 20 years has the state begun to take on more responsibility in rural areas. We support institutions of the Diocese of Mbulu in three areas: health, schooling, and individual scholarships.

Health · since 2015

Lab Technician College in Bashanet.

The Bishop Nicodemus Hhando College of Health Science (BNHCHS) was founded to address the severe shortage of lab technicians in rural Tanzania.

The college opened in 2015 with a two-year course. When the state suddenly stopped recognising the "Certificate" qualification, the college had to be upgraded to a three-year "Diploma" course – a Herculean task. Additional buildings had to be built, lab equipment acquired, and lecturers further qualified. In autumn 2021 the first students passed the diploma exam.

Students of the Clinical Medicine course

Health · since 2023

Classrooms for Clinical Medicine.

The BNHCHS is being expanded with a second course of study. Clinical Officers are trained in a three-year programme to serve as the de-facto doctors of rural dispensaries and health centres.

With proceeds from our 2022 charity art auction we funded two new classrooms and additional equipment, allowing the first cohort of Clinical Medicine students to start in October 2023. The 2023 auction's proceeds covered start-up funding for the first year – including lecturer salaries, equipment and a few scholarships for capable students in need.

Education · since 2013

Sanu Tec Secondary School.

A multi-year construction story: the dining-and-multipurpose hall, built piece by piece because there was never enough money at once.

2013: Kusaidia funded the roof. 2016: the window panes (the metal frames had been built by students themselves). 2019: the cement floor. 2020: tables and benches, so the hall could finally serve as a dining and event space.

For most projects we cover only the material costs – the school itself builds the structures with students and teachers, as part of vocational training in masonry, carpentry and other trades.

Education

Madunga Girls Secondary School.

Run by Indian sisters, the school ranks #1 in Manyara Region and is in the national top 50 out of 2,700 schools. It is a boarding school – because the rural population lives so dispersed that daily commutes are impossible.

The pupils were endangered by wildlife (hyenas, elephants, leopards) and by humans from the surrounding area. A long-standing wish of the school management was fulfilled in our project: a solid wall enclosing the girls' dormitories. The 2018 follow-up project completed the perimeter.

Scholarships · since 1997

Student Support Program.

Need and capability – the only two criteria for support.

We fund 50 % to 70 % of school fees for secondary and vocational students. Secondary school grants are full grants; vocational training is partly grant, partly loan – similar to a student loan, repayable within five years after graduation and employment, so we can fund more students.

One memorable visit in Mbulu: while talking to the Education Secretary, a young woman named Salome Doriya knocked, came in, and thanked us. She had been supported through secondary school and a teachers' college, and is now a primary school teacher in Mbulu.
